Study a language at The NSW School of Languages

NSW School of Languages is a distance education language specialist school. It is part of a network of Department of Education schools that provides education to students by distance education.

NSW School of Languages offers enrolment in the following languages:

  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Indonesian
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Latin
  • Modern Greek
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Spanish

NSW School of Languages caters for students in Years 9 to 12 who attend a NSW or ACT Government or non-Government school which does not offer one of the above languages.

Students in Years 8 and 10 can choose to study a language at the NSW School of Languages as an Elective in Years 9 to 10 and Years 11-12.

The courses contribute towards ROSA, Preliminary and HSC requirements.

Learning at the NSW School of Languages is supported through a diverse program of online courses, speaking lessons, video conferencing and email.  Each term study days are held at the NSW School of Languages in Petersham where students enjoy the opportunity to meet and learn with other students and staff.

If students choose to study a language course at the NSW School of Languages the course will replace one of the Electives that students study at Homebush Boys High School. The language lessons will be timetabled into students’ weekly timetable and studied during school time onsite here at Homebush Boys High.  Lessons will be via distance education, will include lessons via teleconferencing via Zoom or phone, and face to face lesson days at the NSW School of Languages at Petersham once a term.

Nicholas Xue in Year 10  loves studying Japanese at NSW School of Languages

Nicholas commenced studying Japanese at NSW School of Languages in Year 9 and received a Principal’s Award for Academic Excellence for his achievement in 2021.

Nicholas throughly enjoys his NSW School of Languages course.  He identifies a number of benefits in studying with the NSW School of Languages. “All the course work is done online and is there 24/7 so you can work according to your own schedule. The learning environment is the peace and quiet of the school library. The course work is designed for you to be able to balance it with other subjects. The weekly phone lessons are wonderful and If you get Naito sensei, be prepared to have fun conversations about Japan.”

Unfortunately, due to COVID all face-to-face lesson days at the Petersham campus were cancelled in 2021 with remote lessons via Zoom instead. Hopefully this year Nicholas will be able to experience and enjoy even greater immersion in Japanese with on-site lesson days resuming.

John Nekipelov embraces his Russian heritage at NSW School of Languages

John Nekipelov in Year 11 has studied Russian at the NSW School of Languages since Year 9, where he has worked with the wonderful Russian teacher, Ms Maria Lobytsyna, who has helped John improve his Russian language skills and has contributed to John’s development of a greater appreciation of his background language. John’s studies of Russian at the NSW School of Languages have consisted of online lessons, individual lessons via phone and Zoom, and face-to-face lesson days at the NSW School of Languages where he has had the opportunity to meet and work with other students studying Russian from a wide range of different schools across Sydney. Unfortunately, during 2021 all face-to-face lessons at the NSW School of Languages needed to be held via Zoom, but thankfully this year these wonderful days have been able to resume, and John attended his first face-to-face lesson for 2022 on 13th May at the NSW School of Languages in Petersham. John has thoroughly enjoyed learning Russian at the NSW School of Languages. He describes his experiences below.

Studying Russian at the NSW School of Languages has been very enjoyable for me. I particularly like being able to work at a pace suitable for me. The teachers at the school are friendly and supportive. I have a one-on-one phone lesson with my teacher every week. Being a private lesson, it allows me to have any individual support I need. This is very different and a big advantage compared to being in a class with many other students. I would recommend studying at the NSW School of Languages to any student wanting to learn a language or wishing to study a language they already speak.

Three years of studying Russian through distance education has also helped John develop a mature and responsible attitude to his studies. These are skills which will serve John well as he continues his studies in the senior school and beyond.
