Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

Inspire – High potential and gifted education at Homebush Boys High School reflects the NSW Department of Education’s commitment to ensuring every student is engaged, challenged and supported to achieve personal excellence across the intellectual, creative, physical and social-emotional domains of potential.

At Homebush Boys High School, we recognise that:

Potential exists on a continuum and may be demonstrated at different times and in different ways.
Students may show high potential in one or more domains, and domains can overlap.
High potential learners benefit from purposeful differentiation, including enrichment, extension and, where appropriate, acceleration.

Through high expectations, quality teaching and targeted opportunities (including our Enrichment approach), we support students to develop their potential into achievement.

Domains of Potential

The NSW Department of Education identifies four domains of potential. At Homebush Boys High School, we recognise that students may demonstrate high potential in one or more of these domains and that potential can emerge at different stages of learning. Through quality teaching, targeted opportunities and enrichment experiences, we support students to develop their strengths across each domain.

Intellectual domain

Students may demonstrate high potential through advanced reasoning, rapid learning, curiosity and the ability to apply knowledge to unfamiliar problems. At Homebush Boys High School, this is supported through enrichment and extension tasks, academic competitions, inquiry-based learning, and opportunities such as Battle of the Minds, Australian Business Week, mathematics enrichment and STEM challenges.

Creative domain

High potential in the creative domain may be seen in originality, imagination, innovation and expressive thinking. Students are supported through creative performance and design opportunities, including Battle of the Bands, creative problem-solving tasks, digital design, coding, robotics, and project-based learning experiences.

Physical domain

Students may demonstrate high potential through coordination, strength, endurance and advanced physical skill. At Homebush Boys High School, students are supported through representative sport pathways, state-wide knockout competitions, specialist coaching opportunities and structured school sport programs.

Social-emotional domain

High potential in the social-emotional domain may be demonstrated through leadership, empathy, self-regulation and collaboration. Students are supported through leadership opportunities, public speaking and debating, team-based challenges, mentoring experiences and co-curricular activities that promote confidence, responsibility and positive relationships.

How does our school identify high potential in students?

Homebush Boys High School uses a range of evidence-informed practices to identify high potential and gifted students. We recognise that students may demonstrate potential in different ways, and we work to ensure identification processes are fair and inclusive for students from all backgrounds.

Students may be identified through:

School-based and system data, including achievement, progress and growth over time
Classroom assessment, including pre-testing, formative assessment and system led tests
Teacher observation and professional judgement, using clear criteria and multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning
Evidence of higher-order thinking, creativity, leadership, initiative, or advanced skills within a domain
Student self-nomination and goal-setting conversations
Parent/carer information that supports a broader understanding of student strengths and interests

Identified students are supported through differentiated classroom practice and targeted opportunities to develop potential into achievement.

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

Teachers support high potential and gifted students through planned differentiation and evidence-informed teaching practices, including:

Enrichment and extension tasks that increase depth, complexity and challenge
Explicit success criteria + feedback, so students know what high performance looks like and how to improve
Curriculum compacting (where appropriate) to reduce repetition and create space for deeper learning
Higher-order questioning and inquiry, including open-ended problem solving and authentic tasks
Flexible grouping, including opportunities to collaborate with similar-readiness peers and mixed-ability teams
Choice and student voice, enabling students to pursue interests and strengths within outcomes
Formative assessment cycles to monitor growth and adjust challenge over time

Across our school

Homebush Boys High School provides a wide range of whole-school opportunities that support the development of high potential and gifted students across the intellectual, creative, physical and social-emotional domains. These opportunities extend learning beyond the classroom and allow students to apply their strengths in authentic, collaborative and challenging contexts.

These opportunities include:

Academic challenge and enrichment programs, such as Battle of the Minds, Mathematics Roadshows, Australian Business Week and a range of STEM challenges
Creative and performance opportunities, including Battle of the Bands and public performance events
Public speaking and debating competitions, developing communication, critical thinking and leadership skills
Sport pathways, including participation in NSW state-wide knockout sporting competitions
Technology and innovation programs, such as Robotics workshops, 3D printing, Raspberry Pi programming, and participation in the Coding Community Club
Clubs and co-curricular groups, including Chess Club and the Environment Club, that promote strategic thinking, problem-solving and collaboration

Through these experiences, students are encouraged to extend their abilities, take intellectual risks, and develop confidence, creativity and leadership skills in supportive, high-expectation environments.
