Creative and Performing Arts

Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA)

In CAPA subjects, students discover a variety of art forms through the study of Music and Visual Arts, where students learn to appreciate, create, compose, listen, and perform.

Students study 100 hours of mandatory Music and Visual Arts in Years 7 and 8, with an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in these subjects as Elective Courses in Years 9 and 10, and as Higher School Certificate Courses in Years 11 and 12.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts education at Homebush Boys High School highly values how students engage in the creative and intellectual process to produce artworks that demonstrate an approach that is imaginative, inventive and challenging. Visual Arts places a high regard on how students develop an informed point of view and encourages tolerance, diversity and empathy between students, teachers and others in the expression of different points of view which leads to respecting cultural diversity within our societies and also in other regions and cultures.

Music

Music education at Homebush Boys High School provides students with the opportunity to continue to build on musical experiences, developing the knowledge skills and understanding necessary for active engagement and enjoyment in performing, composing and listening.  It provides students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills, understanding and experiences within a broad musical context.

Extracurricular Music Ensembles and Private Music Tuition

Extracurricular Music Ensembles and Private Music Tuition are offered at Homebush Boys High School as additional opportunities for students to develop their skills and instrumental technique outside of the classroom.

Concert Band - Tuesday mornings 7:45 am – 8:45 am

Homebush Boys High School’s Concert Band is an ensemble for all wind, brass, strings and percussion players with prior musical experience. Students in this ensemble attend weekly rehearsals, and take part in both school concerts and community performances throughout the year. Concert Band students are encouraged to undertake private music tuition and are expected to demonstrate a commitment to this ensemble through attendance at weekly rehearsals and regular home practice.

Drum Corps - Thursday Morning 7:45 am – 8:45 am

The Drum Corps has a longstanding tradition at Homebush Boys High School. This ensemble is for committed students and musicians who would like to learn and develop percussion skills and play as part of a group. No prior experience is necessary. The HBHS Drum Corps often takes part in external ceremonies, including ANZAC day marches and other formal events.

Private Music Tuition

At HBHS, we offer private music tuition with experienced and qualified tutors who have a passion for music education. We encourage parents to consider the benefits of private music tuition as an investment in their child's musical development.
